FIRE BOARDS.
AN AMENDMENT BILL. (Special to “Tiino.C”) WELLINGTON, Sept, 17. The Fire Brigades Amendment lliii, which has been introduced by tho Hon. Dr. Find-lay, provides that a proposal by a local authority to apply for dissolution of a Fin; Board must he submitted t*> a poll of ratepavers. This is already required when ax new Fire Board is jiroposed to be created. It is further proposed in the Bill Unit in either of these cases the proposal Shall not bo deemed to he carried -unless a.t least onethird of the ratepayers have validly exercised their votes: .Section -I giver-, a Fire Board power to take land under llie Public ‘Works Act for a (ire bri--.rado station. Section 0 repeals exiting borrowing powers, and provides that a 13;::ird roquiring'nioney for ac<l'uiri«jaSUnd> erecting or improving I uild-iivJ^ ;i W:irehasing plant or paying off raise ,a loan, .win;the; on a banlir'.Overdrnft or by rue issue of debentures, oil in ■ neh other manner as t-lio Bon'd thinks Jit. The total amount borrowed for the time being remaining unpaid, must- not at any time- exceed. £3,000, except in the ease of -a loan raised for the purpose of paying off a proviou,s loan. It is made the duty of every .-Fire Board to give -assistance -when-required to the Inspector of Fire .-Boariiij and to place t-lio brigade tempdi'-ari'ly under' his control when so requested by him. The inspector is empowered to call out* any fire brigade on -an alarm of fire when and where -lie thinks fit, in order to test its efficiency.
