The Union Company’s big mail boat Makurn. which is now being completed on the Clyde, is to take up her running in the Vancouver service from Sydney on November 23rd. A Leipzig journal states that the heavy increase in working expenses lino compelled the Hamburg-American lino awl the North German Lloyd Company to take sfepp with a view to securing financial assistance from the German Government in the form of loans of Imperial funds at a low rate of interest. The loans would lie devoted to new constructions. The plea which is put forward on behalf of the two large German shipping companies is-no doubt warranted, but it is conceivable that in reality this annlication may have been prompted by a desire to recover for German shipping the blue ribbon of the Atlantic, which was lost upon the advent of the Lusitania and Mauretania. The Government for its part may not lie unwilling to .take advantage of the opportunity in order to add to its fleet of auxiliary cruisers and transports. The Norwegian barque Ariel, 796 tons, arrived to-day (cays a Press Association message from Dunedin last might) after a voyage of 30 days from Surprise Island with a cargo of guano. Bad weather prevented her getting through Cook ’Strait. On trying to make Foveaux Strait a S U. gale drove her south of the Snares, and on September ll.tli in increased in force. The gale,.raged with hurricane force for 22 hours, tearing two boats from their lashings and washing the galley. Seas stove in the forecastle door and tore the men’s bunks from the bulkheads. The Ariel passed the Snares on Sunday night, and got moderate to fine weather until she reached the shelter of the land. BY TELEGRAPH. MELBOURNE, Sept, 17'. Sailed—Moeraki (last ivgnt) for Bluff.
