TO BE CELEBFtATED IN GISBORNE.

MONSTER PICNIC, BABY SHOW,

AND PROCESSION,

At tho meeting of the East Coast Trades and -Labor Council on Saturday evening, a letter was received from Mrs. Scott, the secretary of tho Cook County Women’:) Guild, stating that tho Guild intended holding a monster picnic and baby show on Labor Day, 1-ltli October, in tho Domain in aid of the Maternity Homo and Children’s Creche, and inviting tho Trades Council to assist in a procession and co-operaio with tho sports committee, it was stated that the City and’ Salvation Army Bands had offered their assistance.

Tho secretary of tho Council stated that tho Maiiagomeiit Committee had discussed tho matter, and had invited the various unions to consider tho project and forward their decisions. Tho soeretary read a number of replies ho had received, ail of which warmly supported tho proposal. After a briol discussion it was unanimously resol vod to colobrnte Labor Day by tho holding of a procession, amt Lo assist tho Women’s Guild in their sports. It was resolved that tho Management Committee bo tho committee to arrange all details, and a sub-com-mittee was appointed to meet tho AVoinon’s Guild and discuss with thorn as to tho manner in which tlio Council could assist in the sports programme. At a subsequent mooting ol' tho Management Gommitteo, the matter of tho procession was discussed. It was decided that the procession bo a trades display, and that each union make its own arrangements for the display, and also that tho friendly societies, the fire brigade, tho local bodies, and local business people be invited to lake part in the procession. Tho matter of a comic cycle parade was also mentioned, and the secretary was instructed to interview tho secretary of tlio Gisborne Cycling Club on the matter. Tlio question as to whether Labor Day was a public holiday was raisod, and it was pointed out that tlio day was a holiday under the Factories Act. it was ultimately resolved that tlio Mayor be requested to declare tho day a. public holiday, following tlio precedent of the largor contres.
