The City Council to-night, by five votes to four, refused permission for a band performance on Sunday, on the ground, us one councillor put .it, that this was the fhin end of. the wedge in introducing a Continental Sunday. NAPIER, Sept. 10. Inquiry regarding the Napier volunteers go to show that there is some irregularity of attendance as is being experienced in other parts of the country, but no inefficiency to the extent that might be inferred from Major Halpin’s remarks on Monday when he announced his intention of retiring from the battalion, and the allegations of want of unity among the officers are also denied. DANNEVIEKE, Sept. 10. To-day a young man named William Richter, a recent arrival from Germany, was before the Court charged with the theft of jewellery, breaking and entering, and theft of a bicycle on Julv 4. He stole the bicycle at Mastcyton, rode through to Dannevirke, and threw the machine in the stream. He visited the residence of “W. F. Knight- on July 9th, and asked for and was supplied with food. On leaving he saw a window open, and went in and stole a jewel case, the property of Mrs. Williams. Pie went on to Napier, and on returning on August oth again entered the house, but was discovered and decamped without appropriating anything. The robbery was a mystery, but Ricliter was subsequently arrested in Wellington for the theft of the bicycle, and the jewels and a ring, identified as that of Mrs. Williams, was found in the lining of his coat. Ho stated lie had thrown the other jewellery in' the river near Napier. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. For the theft of the bicycle at Masterton he received three months’ imprisonment. Richter was also committed for sentence at Woodville on “Wednesday for theft at Papatawa. PALMERSTON N., Sept. 10. The Supreme Court was continued to-day before Mr. Justice Chapman. Thomas Glee-son was charged with a breach of the Bankruptcy. Act by incurring debts without any reasonable grounds of expectation of paying for the same. The Deputy Official Assignee produced tlie bankrupt’s books, which showed a had state of affairs. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy on the grounds of accused’s inexperience, and sentence was deferred. WELLINGTON, Sept. 10. The following is Captain Edwin’s weather forecast to 3 p.m. to-morrow: Westerly winds strong to gale north of New Plymouth and Napier, and a southerly gale probably elsewhere with rain and a rising barometer. Mr. A. E. Berth-ling, former headkeeper of the Zoological Societies’ Gardens, Regent’s Park, London, and lately chief ranger and gamekeeper for the Tourist- Department at Rotorua, has been appointed superintendent of the Newtown Zoo, “Wellington, at a salary of £2OO. Mr. Berthling brought out to Now Zealand, at- the request of the High Commissioner, the herd of chamois presented to the Dominion by the Emperor of Austria. A conference of fruit importers is to be held in Wellington on the 22nd inst. to protest against the action of the Government in enforcing the full letter of the fruit regulations in respect of Island oranges, etc. Meanwhile endeavors are being made to have the regulations suspended until such time as the conference can be held. There is a steamer due from Fiji next week’laden with fruit which is not covered by the required certificate that it has not been grown within one mile of any orchard or plantation wherein no fruit lly exists. It is contended that to secure such certificates is an impracticable requirement. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept, 10. Richard Taylor, 4(3 years of age, a cab driver, residing in Milton Street, Sydenham, was found dead in bis house about 10 o’clock this morning. He was unmarried, and lived alone. J-Ie bad been unwell for two or three days, and -about noon yesterday complained to a neighbor that ho was suffering from terrible pains. "When the neighbor went to Taylor’s house this morning she found him sitting in his chair, dead. Ho had apparently died without a struggle, as otherwise he would have fallen off the chair. An inquest was held, when a verdict of death from heart disease was returned. DUNEDIN, Sept. 10. At a meeting of the local Bootmakers’ Union to-night, a communication was received from the Executive of the Federation-, urging members not to accept any bonus or work any piece work bonus system unless the system bad been approved by the Federation. It was decided to urge tho Government to insert a clause in tho Arbitration Bill making it illegal for employers to adopt a bonus or premium bonus -system, and the following motion was also carried: “We are of opinion that tho time is ripe for the introduction of a price on a weekly wage, basis fixed for every operation so .as to enable members to compute earnings.” INVERCARGILL, Sept, 10. It was reported- at to-night’s meeting of the Borough Council that the Invercargill consolidated loan debentures were quoted on July 30th on London Stock Exchange at buyers £lO4, sellers £lO6, a premium of £2 17s 6d. This is the highest yet quoted.
