SHEARERS’ DISPUTE.

THE CANTERBURY AWARD.

CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 9. Tho award in tho shearers’ dispute was received from the Arbitration Court to-day. Tho award states that, subject to tho provisions of the award, an employer will have full control of liis shearing operations. Tho number of sheep to be shorn shall'be agreed upon approximately between the employer, of his agent, and Ithe shearers before the commencement of tho shearing. The hours of shearing aro to be from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., or 5.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., with intervals for meals as may bo agreed upon. The rate to pay is to be- 18s per 100 with rations and an additional 3s 4d ; without rations. No shearer is bound to shear canceled sheep. No shearer shall enter a catching pen after the bell lias rung. All sheep are to be taken carefully from the catching pen, and no shearer is to be compelled to shear sheep he has reasonable ground to consider wet, nor shall the employer be- compelled to pen sheep that ho considers wet. The Union is to do all in its power to prevent any strike, and if any strike shall occur, iii which any member of the Union shall take part, such strike shall be prima. facie evidence chat the Union lias committed a breach of its duty. In the event of a strike, tlie operation of all clauses in the award is to be suspended until further order of the Court. The hours of work, wages and other conditions of work for all workers coming witi.-ii tlie scope- of the award shall be fixed by agreement between each employer and individual worker employed l by him. The award is to remain in force from September 14tli, 1908. to March 31st, 1910.
