GISBORNE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING
The usual monthly meeting of the Gisborne'(School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs John Somervell (chairman), Revs. L. Dawson Thomas, Win. Grant, and C. Griffin, Messrs A. Spence, F. W. Riacli, A. Sawyer, Geo. Wildish, and Geo. Darton. Mr. F. J. Rowley, headmaster, was also in attendance.
- A -lotter 1 was read from' tho secretary of the Gisborne Harmonic Society requesting the use of one of the infant classrooms for the purposes 0 f rehearsals.-—After discussion the matter was left in the hands' of the chairman to make tho necessary arrangements before permission was granted. Mr. G. K. Pasley wrote on behalf of the residents of Milltown regarding the proposed school in that district, and requesting tho committee to withdraw their recommendation to the Board for a side school, and to ask the Board to grant a “full” school for Milltown. It was also mentioned in the letter that the In spector-General, Chief Inspector, and Messrs MeLernon and Morgan had been driven round and shown out the proposed boundaries of the district. Some discussion took place on the letter, and the Chairman stated that ho understood that the Minisor for Education was in favor of granting a side school, but not a “full” school for the district.
Rev. C. Griffin thought that some further, expression of opinion from tho residents of Milltown should be obtained, as to their reasons for wanting a “full” school. Mr. Sawyer said that ho was pf the opinion that the writer of the letter had taken the matter into liis own hands, and that the letter was not really from the residents of Milltown. Mr. l’asloy had told him that any further steps he took in the matter would not be through the School Committee but through the member for the district, Hon. Jas. Carroll. Mr. Darton said that Milltown had no chance of getting a “full” school at present. The residents could easily get a side school, which, if tlio necessity arose, could be made into a “full” school. Speaking as member for the North Ward on the Board of Education he strongly protested against the manner in which he had been ignored when the party visited the proposed, boundaries of the Milldistrict.
. It was finally decided to reply to the letter, stating that the committee could do nothing in the matter, which was now in the hands of the Board and the Education Department. Mr. Rowley brought up the question of the school swimming bath, and put forward suggestions whereby an arrangement could be come to for the public to have the use of the bath.—A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Somervell, Darton, and Rowley was appointed to draw up regulations in connection with the Jise of, the bath by the public, and also to report on question of a caretaker lor the bath. A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting concluded.
