WAIKOHU COUNTY BILL.
THE SECOND BEADING

WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. In the Legislative Council to-day, the Hon. Captain Tucker moved the second reading of the Waikohu County Bill, which purposes to cut off the Waikohu and Waipaoa Ridings of the Cook County, and create themselves a _ separate county. These two ridings were largo enough to form a separate county, and the change was desired by the ratepayers ot those ridings. It was not opposed by the Cook County Council, of which he was chairman. The now ooun-tv would comprise about- half of the existing county. The valuation of Cook County was £1,885,000 in 1901, and by 1906 -it had increased to £5,180,000. This rapid incroaso was duo to the extension of settlement. *lhe Hon. T. lv. Macdonald inquired as to tho financial adjustment as between tho two counties. Captain Tucker explained that this was already provided for by the general statute. There would bo an inquiry, as in all such cases. The Bill was read a second time.
