Mr. J. H. Martin, of HauLti, a local coursing enthusiast, is importing two valuable thoroughbred coursing dogs from Christchurch by the s.s. Waikare this morning. The social and dance in aid of tlio proposed, Maternity Home will bo held in Ilis Majesty’s Theatre this evening. The Women’s Guild has boon working hard to secure tlio success of tlio function, and it is anticipated thoro will bo a largo crowd present.
A “Hospital Sunday” is being arranged by the Gisborne City Band. The Salvation Army and Private Bands have been asked to .assist, and it is hoped that the public will show their sympathy by giving every support towards the success of such a well-deserving cause. Sunday next is tlio date chosen. Further particulars will be announced later. The Turanganui Lodge of Druids will hold a progressive euchre party at the Lodge Room, .Masonic Hall, to-morrow evening, when all Druids and their lady friends are, cordially invited to attend. A most*enjoyable evening is assured, and a large assemblage is expected. Handsomo prizes are offered for the competition, and several vocal items will be given. Tlio following was the Customs revenue for the port of Gisborne during the month of August:—(Spirits £1405 19s lOd. cigars, etc., £39 7s 6d, tobacco £434. wine £7G 10s 7d, beer £lB4 2s, coffee £6, goods by weight £203 10s 3d, ad valorem £1517 0s tkl, other duties £27 IGs, other receipts £459 11s 4d; total, £1353 18s.

The annual general meeting of the Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club will bo held in Townley's Hall on Saturday evening next, at S o’clock. The business will consist of the adoption of the report and bain neo-sheet-, election of officers, and to discuss tko suggested improvements to property and the raising of a further loan. A full attendance of members and intending members is requested. A general meeting of the Poverty Bav Coursing Club will be held an the' Royal Hotel this evening, at 8 o’clock, when a full attendance of members is requested, as some important matters are to be dealt with. Considerable interest is being taken in tlio avprking of the club this season, and it is now affiliated with the Coursing Association of New Zealand. Registration under the Unclassified Societies .Act is expected to be completed early next iveek. Major Hold a way and the Riroriros were farewcllod at the Citadel last evening, and entertained at a coffee supper. Air. John Townley presided, and there was a good attendance. The Riroriros gave a number of their concerted items, which were again most favorably received. Bandmaster Jones contributed a couple of recitations, and Alajor Holdaway gave a short and interesting address on the Army and its work. The Alajor and his company leave for Auckland by the s.s. Waikare this morning.
The Deputy-Official Assignee (Air. J. Coleman) has received the statement of accounts in the insolvent estate of Percy John The liabilities are set down at £<9 19s 6d, and the assets nil. The bankrupt states that lie went into the boardinghouse Vmsines on borrowed money. Air. J. G. Nicholls brought an action in the Magistrate's Court against him and recovered £6S 6s Ixl. Ho was unable to pay the. amount, and was unable to make an offer. He had also assisted his wife in working a small dairy farm owned by her, but as he has’no assets he is unable to make any terms with his creditors. Something of a departure in the wav of local industry is on view in Mr. H. J. Grieve’s window, consisting of a hockey championship shield, designed and manufactured in his own workshop. The shield itself is a nice piece of mottled totara, presented to the Association by Alessrs Grundy end Shounan. and tlie mountings are of solid silver and gold. Tlio top design consists of the letters P.8.H.A., beautifully worked into a monogram. On the body of the shield is a largo shield-shaped piece of silver, polished bright. Across this are two hockey sticks, with gold handles, a ball and cap, and between the sticks various attitudes of players arc cleverly depicted. Beneath this is a dull-finished ribbon of silyer, bearing the inscription Poverty Bay Hockey Championship Shield, “Pro Victoria,” and round the edge of the shield are ten small shields on which the name of the winning club is engraved each year. The hockey designs are very well executed and does great credit’to the designer. ’
