A sub-committee reported to a meeting to-night of tho Council of the New Zealand Football Association that they had gono into the pi'oposal to invite a South African team t<> New Zealand in 1909, and recommended that such invitation be sent. The cost of the tour, £IOOO to £llOO, should bo covered by guarantees bv tlio various Associations in tiio ioJlowing amounts'. Auckland, "Wellington, and Otago, £250 each; Taranaki £100; Wanganui, Bay, Canterbury, and Southland £SO- each ; Wairarapa and South Canterbury £25 each. Tho eommitteo further recommended that four guarantors be obtained for hank purposes to guarantee £250 each; that each centre provido hoarding accommodation ; that the secretary write to tho South. African team tentatively inviting a team on the lines of the invitation to the New South Wales Association in 1903; that endeavors be made to arrange matches on tho return of the team in Australia, and that Australia ho invited to contribute towards Hie expenses of the New Zealand Council. HockeyT The usual weekly meeting of the Poverty Bay Hockey Association was held in the lloyal Hotel last night. Present; Messrs Pavitt (president), J. J. Martin (vice-president), l’ottic, Davy, Sim, Lewis, .Roderick, Grant, and Surgisson. A fetter was received from the Gisborne Ladies’ Hockey Club re granting them the use of the ground on Thursday.—lt was decided to allow them tlie use of the ground after the men’s match, about Inlf-past three. A letter was received from the City Football Club re playing hockey early owing to several of their players being in the hockey team.—lt was resolved to play only one hockey match, commencing at 2.20 p.m. A letter from the New Zealand Hoekoy Association ro an English team visiting next year, asked if the local Association would guarantee £SO. —The secretary was instructed to reply that the Association at present was unable to guarantee anything. The President's action m appointing Mr. W. Schmidt delegate to the New Zealand Hockey Association was confirmed. It was resolved to hold over the Ivin Kalia appeal to the New Zealand Hockey Association until Mr. Olsen (referee) returns. It was resolved to communicate with the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association re visiting here on 12th met. It was aljso decided to mako a levy of £1 on each club in part payment for tho shield which -lias just been completed, and to convoy the Association’s thanks -to Messrs Grundy and Sliennan and Mr. H. The members of the AVellington representative hockey team, who are on their way to play Auckland for the Challenge Shield, played a match against the Wanganui representatives today. The weather was beautiful and the ground was dry. The game was of a very even nature, and resulted in a draw, each side scoring a goal. In the first spell the visitors showed better combination in the forwards. Tho Wanganui team expects to play Auckland for tho shield on 12th September, should the latter still bo holding it- J THE TURF.
