Oil Saturday -afternoon a team from tho Taruhcru Freezing Works journeyed to Makauri to try conclusion's with tho local toam, which lias this season proved iuvinciblo. The game was productive of a very keen struggle, and play at tinios became most oxciting. The Makauri veteran, Walker, found in W.hitely, the old English player, an opponent worthy of his steel, and tho mannor in which those two old enthusiasts fell upon each other and their frantic struggles after the clusivo leather, caused a great deal of amusement. The match, as befitting one so hardly contested, ended in a draw, each side scoring 5 points. After tho game tho Taruhcru players were hospitably entertaiued by tho Makauri team. Tnc usual weekly meeting of tho Poverty Bay Rugby Union was hold last evoning in tlio Masonic Hotel. Present: Messrs H. .15. Maude (chairman), L. B. 6'lierriff, C. Morse, L. O. Ingram, H. Bright, W. Johnston, H. Putlett, G. K. Pasley, and E. L. Maudo (lion. sec.). A letter was received from tlio sec--rotary of the Wairoa sub-Union asking for a fixture with a Poverty Bay team at Wairoa.—lt was resolved that tho secretary reply regretting that the Union was unable to accede to the request this season. In response to a letter, accident in ; suranee was granted to a member of tho Gisborne Club.

The secretary of the Hockey Association wrote asking for a donation for the Ladies’ Hookey Club that took part in the matches against the Wapiti Club. —It was decided that the request be acceded to. The use of one ground at the Domain was granted to the employees of Mr. Geo. Smith for a match against the employees of Messrs AVudo ami Gray, on Saturday, September 12th, and to the St. Andrew’s Junior Bible Class on Thursday next for a match against the School team. A wire was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union stating that Mr. L. F. Pegler, of Hastings, had been appointed roferoe for the representative match on Saturday. The secretary of the Tologa Bay Club reported that his club would have been'perfectly willing to have postponed their cup fixture, but their wishes had not been consulted.—-It was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to the Tologa Bay Club for their action in the matter. It was decided that posters be obtained to advertise the representative match on Saturday, and Messrs Puflett and L. B. fiherriff were appointed t 6 meet the visitors, who will bo taken for a drive in the country on Sunday. A few minor improvements on the ground were sanctioned, and the meeting concluded. BILLIARDS. " There was again a large attendance at Messrs Ostoja and Segediu’s Victoria Billiard Saloon last evening, when the Gray combination gave their second performance in Gisborne. Master George Gray conceded Mr. E. Austin 150 in 500, but the local player was in capital form, and increased his lead during the first couple of hundred. Playing a steady game, Austen rang on nice breake of 22, 21, and 32, early in the game, and was 256 to the boy champion’s 64. Master Gray at this stage gut the halls running, and quickly put on an excellent break of 51, the majority of his points coming from losinghazards off the red. Austen continued to play an excellent game, and tiventually ran out a winner by 94, his opponent’s score standing at 400. Mr. Harry Gray then met Mr. L. McGonigal, conceding the latter 100 in 250 up. The local player was palpably nervous, and had no show with his opponent. AYith breaks of 25, 24, 22, 34, and 30, Gray speedily ran to his points, his opponent only having scored 69. Master Gray then gave a clever exhibition of masse shots, at which he is an adept. Mr. Harry Gray followed with what he termed “an exhibition of shots useful in billiards.” Tockey. N.Z.
