HARBOR MASTER’S SALARY
AN INCREASE GRANTED. At the mooting of the Gisborno Harbor Hoard yesterday, Mr. .Lysnar moved that tho Harbormaster s salary bo .increased to £3OO per year, and in speaking to the motion, said ho thought Captain Cumming’s salary should ho in proportion to the uni omit ho earned lor tlio Board. Ho found that compared with tlio Harbormasters of other ports the Jiar' bormastor was underpaid. Mr. Siovwright .seconded the motion. I-Io did not think tbo Harbormaster shoiild bo underpaid. The Chairman said that from Mr. Lysnar’s statement the i>ublic would think tho Harbormaster was overworked. The tonnage for the T.imaru harbor was double that of Gisborne, M Mr. Lysnar: It is tho other way around. Tho Chairman quoted tho reports to show that the trade in Napier and Timaru was far in excess of Gisborne, adding, “Mr. Lysnar has the idea there is more work in this harbor than in any harbor in the colony, which is absolute nonsense. However, I won’t oppose tho motion.” - Mr. Harris.said ho did not think anv one officer should ho favored. If an all-round increase was asked ,for, he Avonld then bo willing to consider the question. Mr. "Whinray said lie did not like to etc anomalies or incongruities in tlio officers’ salaries, but thought tho whole question of salaries should ho considered. The Harbormaster was not overpaid, hut Captain Martin was also entitled to an increase. Mr. Lysnar said tho amount was very small, and lie hoped tlie motion would bo carried. The Chairman :It is not the amount hut the principle. Tho motion was carried, only Mr. Harris voting against it.
