DISCUSSED AT WHATATUTU

A. largely-attended meeting of ratepayers was held at Whatatutu oil Saturday evening to consider the Cuok County Council’s wide tyre bylaw. Air. AY. D. L.vsnar was present by invitation, and was voted to the chair. Alter a general discussion, the following resolution was proposed bv Captain Tiil'eu and seconded by Air.‘Palmer —“That in tlie opinion of this meeting, considering the heavy cost carters and settlers have been' put to in altering their .tyres and waggons to suit the wide tyro bylaw, the Council ought not in any way to again alter the width of tyres, but if the Council should find it necessary to altor the existing by-law, then it should lie in the direction of repealing the present wide tyro bylaw altogether, and substituting tho provisions in tho Public AA’orks Act, which regulates the traffic according to the weight, this being 13cwt to each pair of wheels.” The resolution was carried unanimously.

Air. AI. Campbell proposed, and Captain Tilton seconded a resolution “That Alessrs Palmer, Ray, Williams, B. Taylor, and McLean should bo a eominitteo to wait on tho Council in support of the resolution at its next mooting.” The committee was given power to add to its number.

The question of severing from tho County, was then discussed. Air. Lysnnr urged that it would not ho advisable to press the matter on during tho present session, but to leave the question in abeyance as far as possible until next year, as an election of the Council would take place in November next, and it might be possiblo to get new members on the Council who would bo willing to put right the question -at variance. If this advice was followed and it was not possible to right the matter he would promise to give his aid toward tho passing of the Bill next session.
