HOTEL LICENSE.

APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE.

Air. R. S. Chilton, proprietor of the British Empire Hotel, made .application to Air. W. A. Barton. S.AI., yesterday for a certificate that lie is a fit and proper person to hold an hotelkeeper’s license. Mr. W. L. Rees appeared lor the applicant, and submitted a petition signed by forty business people asking that the application he granted. The applicant, on oath, stated he had not seen the police reports on the conduct of the hotel, llis place of business at Invercargill had been burnt down about live years ago. He lost by the fire, and it was never suggested that he caused the fire. Pie put in five testimonials as to his cliaiactor. Ho took tho leaso of the hotel from Air. Joyce. He always conducted the hotel properly. He had never been charged in the Court with any offence, lie had practically managed the hotel for the last six months, and no complaint had been made.

Air. J. B. Kells, managing director for Messrs Common, Shelton and Co., Ltd., said he had known the .applicant- for some time, and had done business with him for over three years. He always found him honest and sober, and believed ho would always try to fulfil the law while he held -a license.

William Riaeh also stated that Air. Chilton was a man of good character, and a fit person to hold a license.. Messrs W. Webb, W. Pettie, W. ,T. Cox, W. Smith, J. J. Fry, G. W. Shiei'l.iw. AI. G. Nasmith, T. Corson. T. Leslie, AY. T. Harris, 11. R. Jennings,, W. Hall, and Patrick Jovce gave similar evidence.

His Worship said ho would look over the papers before giving a decision.
