GISBORNE-ROTORUA RAILWAY.
DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER
A meeting of the East Coast Railway League was held on Saturday morning to consider tho advisability of sending a deputation to Wellington to join witli tho Auckland Railway League in bringing tho needs for progressive railway construction before the Minister for Public Works.
Mr. Townley said that as tho. Hon. Captain Tucker would bo in Wellington when tho deputation would be received he thought Captain Tucker should lie asked to act. Tho East Coast Railway was being pushed ahead with reasonable speed. About 140 men were now employed on the works, but there could bo no harm in again pressing the value of tho lino on tho Minister.
Captain Tucker proposed that tho following telegram bo sent to tho Minister for Public Works:—
“The East Coast Railway League has tho honor to congratulate you on the successful opening of tho Wel-lington-Auckland railway, and offers its warmest thanks for the activity at present displayed on the GisborneRotorua line. It would venture to suggest, that work for the unemployed could bo ' successfully found on the line in the summer.”
The proposition was adopted and Captain Tucker consented to act as representative of the League. A telegram was also sent to the Hon. James Carroll congratulating him 1 on his birthday, and thanking him for his assistance in having the line pushed on to the paying point.
