ATTEMPT AT SHOOTING.
A MAN FIRED ON. SEQUEL TO DOAIESTIC TROUBLES [Press Association.] DUNEDIN, August 20. Shortly before 8 o’clock to-niglit a man named John AYelister, who about ten days ago was hound over to keep the peace towards his wife, made an attempt to slioot a man named Geo. Hubbard. Mrs. Webster had been staying at the house of Airs. Downes, her cousin, and in tlie evening Webster presented himself at tlie door, saw his wife, and asked lier to return to him, which she refused to do. He then said that if she did not he would shoot her, and produced a revolver which Downes and Airs. Downes tried to take from him. Failing in tlie attempt they- went for the - police. In the meantime Hubbard, who is Airs Downes’ brother, had followed Webster up, and overtook him at the corner of Cumberland and Frederick Streets: Hubbard asked AVebster what he was doing with the revolver, whereupon Webster fired a shot at him, tlie bullet passing between Hubbard’s legs Hubbard then grabbed AVebster, who is a small man, and held him until the police arrived, when he was taken into custody on a charge of discharging a firearm at Hubbard with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.
