Owing to the prevalence of stoats and weasels in the Long wood Ranges, •Southland, the native birds will soon become a thing of the past. Quite recently one of the racemen of the Round'Hill Mining Company informed the “Western Star” of an unequal contest between a stoat and a pigeon, and that it was now quite a common sight to see a dead kuka or pigeon lying on the ground with a small hole in the back of its neck from 1 which the blood had been sucked by the vermin.

As an example of the way in which the idea of what is right can work itself into the common things of the everyday life. Professor Jones, in a lecture at the University in Sydney the other day. told i good story. “I remember,” lie said, “a servant girl who was undoubtedly converted. She was asked, ‘What change has your conversion brought to you. Do you do anything now tint you did not do before you were converted ?’ The girl considered for a while. ‘Yes,’ she said. ‘I sweep under the mats now.’ ”
