The matches in tlio Thursday coinpetition this afternoon will bo between Alhambra and Gisborne, at 1.40 p.m., and City ami- Star, at 3 p.m. .Alhambra is the weakest team in the competition, and Gisborne should win, but- the result of the City-Star match is very doubtful. After" the defeat indicted on Gisborne last Thursday by City, it would occasion no surprise to sue them victorious over the Star also.

WANGANUI, August 19
Tlio representative iooibail m-.teii was played in the Lecreati.n Giound this afternoon in fairly fine weather and before a poor attendance of spectators. An interesting ; ame resulted in a win for Wanganui by JO points to 6. Tho teams v.mc Itiir'y evenly matched, the South'-»n>l forwards, if anything, being better than Wanganui, especially in loose, dribbling rushes. The backs were an evenlot, though the visitors were supermini line kicking. In the first spell, Southland, playing with the wind and sun at their backs, had the best of the game, and McNceco kicked two fine penalty goals. In the s??<»id spell tlio game was fairly even for a time. Then Wanganui woke up., and after strenuous play Meuli and Mitchell each scored a try in good positions, imtli being converted. Tlio game ended: Wanganui 10, Southland 6. Mr. Griffiths, New Plymouth, ■refereed efficiently.
THE NORTHERN UNION GAME. TEAMS STARTING IN TIM ARIL [Press Association.] TIMARU, August 19. There is every likelihood that Northern Union football will be played in South Canterbury next season. Several prominent footballers, who head the movement, state that sufficient support will be forthcoming to start three senior teams. It is proposed to pay teams on tour for losttime, to assist clubs erecting training sheds, and pay part of junior teams’ travelling expenses. Already £IOO has been promised to set the game on a good footing.
