It is understood tli it the Government Printer will shortly issue a book of nautical tables, to bo published by the Marine Department, which it is believed will be the most, complete set-of azimuth and ex-meridian tables ever yet published. The tables will be especially useful for facilitating the work of finding the ship’s position from astronomical observations. By their aid the true bearing of any heavenly body may be found with only about half a dozen figures at any time of the day or night, and in any latitude. The ex-meridian iables give a true latitude at distances from the meridian which are said to exceed the limits of any other ex-meridian tables known, being available for a few stars up to three hours from the meridian, and occasionally for sun or stars when the body is even as much as 4odeg. from the meridian. A small book, containing twenty-four charts, for use in connection with the tables in plotting the astronomical hearings for obtaining the position of the ship at sea, will be published at the sarno time.
