Its area is 500 square feet, and its weight 9J tons. Tho scheme recently prepared by the Union Company for the improvement of tho conditions of its dock and engine-room hands has been extended t 0 the crew of tho turbine steamer Maori. Tho principal features of tho schemo are in connection with the men’s food and the manner in which it is served. Certain men / are told off to act as what are known ? in barracks as mess orderlies. Various improvements are effected in tablo arrangements, and it is understood that the bill of fare i 6 to be somewhat improved. The bill of fare provided •by tho Company for its seamen and firemen has always been a good one, hut it is stited that the scheme provides for one of much higher grade and greater variety than obtains among ship hands all over the sea. Commenting upon the laxity of the Melbourne Harbor Trust in providing for the 6afe navigation of the ■ Yarra, the “Age” says tbo Maheno stuck in the mud in the bed of the stream at the foot of Spencer Street ■when leaving on her last trip to the .Dominion. As the Maheii 0 was only drawing 22fc at the time, the “Age” considers that recent dredging operations in tho vicinity had been carried out in a very slipshod manner.
