Tho Poverty Bay Hunt Club held their annual races on Saturday and,, contrary to expectations, the weather was glorious and a fair crowd went out to the course. Tlie races, except in one instance, were all wellcontested, and the events wore all got away to time. The most disappointing feature of the day was tho smallness of the fields in the hunter’s events, and it is due to the Club members, who have eligible horses, to start them, if not for the stake, at least for the sake of the Chib. In one race only two horses, out of a nomination of seven, faced the startor, and in.tho Clip Steepleoliuso, tlie field only numbered three. (Air Rutledge) 3. Tugela, 11.12, also started. Llangallan was the first to move out of tho barrier, and with Puarakau made the running to tlio turn for home. -Llangallan then came away and won easily, Aloss Rose beating Paurakau on the post for second place. OPEN HACK HANDICAP. First

prize £7. Four -furlongs. Air A. B. Newman’s Eiya 9.0 i(Broadlield) 1. Mr L. Fan’s Stylish 10.6 Clones) 2. Air C. Duff’s Pluck, 10.1 (AlcDeod)- 3. Puhiora 9.4, Banker 9.2, Lloyd’s 9.0, Billy 9,0, Whukawiria 9.0, and Paulanius 9.0 algo started. Stylish got a- good start and led to the turn. Hero Eiya put in a fast run and won a good race by a length, Pluck being half a longfch behind Stylish. HUNTERS’ HANDICAP STEEPLE-

The only starters. ■ Alercury jumped well and Lein" always in the lead was never troubled by Tugela, who finished three lengths behind the winner.

HACK HANDICAP. First prize £7. Six furlongs. Mr. C. Duff’s Pluck, 9.13 (McLeod) 1 Mr. C. Morse’s To Arai, 10.2 (Brdadfield) 2 Mr. A. B. Newman’s Liya, 9.0 (Barron) 3 Shanks 9.9, Puliiora 9.0, and Whakawiria 9.0 also started. Pluck took up the lead from the jump-off, 'and keeping close in all the way, won comfortably by two lengths, Eiya being half a length behind To Arai.

Bismarck fell at the last jump, but the rider remounted and rodo past the post. HUNTERS’ BRACELET HANDICAP. First prize bracelet, second trophy value £2. One and a-qunr-ter miles. Mr. C. J. Bennett’s Puarakau 12.0 (Mr. Rutledge) 1 Mr. S. Newman’s Llangallan, 12.1 (Mr. McKenzie) 2 Mr. TV.' Scott’s Moss Rose, 11.7 (Mr. Scott) 3 Westward 12.8 also started.

Westward was tho first to break tlni line, but at the rear of the course Llangallan took up the lead. At the turn for homo the field closed in, and Paurhkau. coming with a well-timed run, wou easily by three lengths.

Delightful weather favored golfers on Saturday afternoon, and there was a large number of players out on the links. Tlie monthly medal competition provided play for the day, the winner turning up in L. Brown, who went round in 118, but his handicap of 30 reduced, his score to 88, J .11. Bull and J. Howie were runner-up with scores of 93—2—91 and 101—10 —9l respectively. There were a large number of lady players out, but tlie dance the evening before appeared to bo responsible for putting the majority of them off their game. The best players arc putting in steady practice, in view of the approaching tussle for the championship, which should provide a great deal of interest and somo very keen games. A. M. Howden is staying in Gisborne for a few days, on Ins way to Auckland,'and has been out frequently on the links. He is in fine form at present, and did a capital round of 85 recently. CHRISTCHURCH CHAAIPIONSHIP [Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 8. Tlie championship of -the Christchurch Golf Club (36 holes) was decided between J. O. Jameson and IL B. Wood, to-day.
