SPORTS AND PASTIMES.
FOOTBALL. Evidence of tlie dying football season was given oil tlio Domain oil , aturday afternoon. There was no teiooi game, the Tokoniarn—Kniti-Utv fixture having been postponed until noxt Saturday, and both grounds woro given ovor to the youthful element. The Old Boys versus School match was played on No. I ground, and alter a roully good game victory rested with the former. No. 2 ground was the scene of the contest between the Working Boys and the combined Catholic and Ka'iti Schools. The grounds were in good order, but only a handful of spectators witnessed the play. SCHOOL V. OLD BOVS. Both sides had strong teams in tlie field, and especially in the first spell, tho game was very even. Iho Old Boys won tho toss and commenced to attack but tho good defenco of the School backs prevented a score. Both sides attacked ill turn, but eventually, from a rush of the Old Boys, Brown got over. Nothing daunted, the School Boys played with great dash, and a smart piece of work between East and Hills ouded in the latter:i gf4. Hy, and cl|ualising thevseoro. August made an excellent attempt' at goal from all awkward angle. Encouraged by their success tho School Boys had all tlie best of the play for the remainder of the half and just before the whistle sounded August put his side in the lead by kicking a good goal from a penalty. The half-timo score was: School 6. Old Boys 3. After ail interval, during which the School Boys were photographed by Air. E. Feat on, play was oven for a time, but tho superior weight and pace of tho Old Boys told their talo, and they had much the best of the game. Tho School Boys made one or two excellent efforts to inoreaso their load, but for tho most part were kept busy defending their line. Tries were added for the Old Boys by C. Pollock 2, Brown 2, and J. Lang, but none of the attempts at goal were successful. The School Boys defended well and put up a good fight against their stronger opponents, but were compelled to acknowledge defeat, tho final score being, Old Boys 15, School 6. For tho losers, East, Itunciinan, Porter, Butler, and Fyson played well, while 0. Pollock, Brown, Bright, and Sceats wore the most prominent for the winners. Mr. D. Cowan refereed, and Messrs. Kinder and P. Fromm hold tho lino flags. WORKING BOYS V. COMBINED SCHOOLS. This game resulted in a rather easy win for tho Working Boys by a large margin. They were a great deal bigger than their opponents, but tho School Boys put up a surprisingly good fight. Tries were scored for the winners by W. Dennett 4, A. Hicks 2, G. Dennett 2, McKinstry 1. W. Dennett also kicked a penalty goal. S. Dennett was responsible for the Schools’ score, the game filially ending in favor of the "Working Boys by 30 points to 3. Mr. 0. Hansen refereed. AUCKLAND BEATS MARLBOROUGH.

AUCKLAND, August S. Tlie first Ranfurly Shield match of the season was played between the representatives of the (Marlborough and Auckland Provinces Rugby Football Unions to-day. "The weather wffs perfect, a calm day and cloudless sky. but tho attendance only numbered about 4000, due, no doubt, to the large number of counter-attractions. The Marlborough team at times made a very good showing, but Auckland’s players were possessed of a greater knowledge of tho filler points of the game. For about half the first spell play was very even, and then the Auckland team had a scoring mood, and ran on 14 points in an equal number of minutes. Coote opened the scoring account with a- try, scored in tho corner, which Magee failed to convert. A minute later he*again scored, Mageo converting. Magee next kicked a goal from a mark by Gillott, and thou Wilson ran in land scored close to the corner. Magee did not convert, and the spell ended : Auckland 14, Marlborough 0. The visiting team put up a hue defence in the second spell, and occasionally the forwards did sonic good work. There was no score in tliis spell until ia -halfhour had gone by, and then IS points wero put on in 15 minutes. Magee, Francis, and Seeling eadli scored tries in quick succession, Mageo converting all three. Murray also scored >a, try just on time, but Magee failed to convert, and tho game ended: Auckland 32, Marlborough 0. The place-kicking of Magee was one of the features of the match. HAWKE’S BAY DEFEATS MANAWATU. [Press Association.J NAPIER, August 8. Tho representative match ,Manawatu v. Hawke’s Bay, was played on the Recreation Grounds this afternoon in fine weather, before a- large attendance. The ground was heavy in places after the recent rain. In the first spell, Hawke's Bay were much superior on tho line-out and in the loose, and more than held their own in the scrums. The spell ended in Hawke’s Bay’s favor by nine to nil. Play was more even in tlie early part of the second spell, but after that Hawke’s Bay had things much thenown way. A good game ended in Hawke’s Bay’s favor by 12 points to 8.
BANNER MATCHES. OUTSIDE RESULTS, [Pkess Association.] DUNEDIN, August 8. The inter-club football .matches concluded to-day. Dunedin 0 points beat Zingari-Richmond nil. Southern 6 points beat Alhambra 3 points. Kuikorai 12 points beat University 5 points. Port Chalmers 6 points beat Union 3 points. Taieri Rovers 29 points beat Pirates nil. Dunedin wins the first and second grade banners. HAWKE’ BAY UNION. ROVERS CLUB DISQUALIFIED. [Peess Association.] NAPIER, August 8. For failing to keep an engagement tho Rugby Union decided to disqualify tlio Rovers Club, who are leading for tho championship, till the end of the season.
