[Press Association.] AUCKLAND, August 6. A boy named Roy Edmonds, aged sixteen, was shooting shags with his brother in a boat at Kerikeri. A cartridge exploded as his brother was closing the breach of his gun, and Roy received the full charge in his right side. He died twelvo hours later. NAPIER, August 6. At an inquest concerning tne death of Mrs. Milgrein, the jury returned a verdict of suicide whilst temporarily insane. J. A. Maude, the judge for the Hawke’s Bay Kennel Club’s annual show, who had been delayed On. the journey, reached Napier at 1 p.m. to-day, -and judged the entries in the afternoon. The show has been extended till -to-morrow. The following are the principal successes:—President’s Cup, for most points in roughcoated collies, J. R. Haynes (won outright) : silver trophy, for most points in greyhounds, Mrs. J. Gleeson; silver trophy, for most points in cocker spaniels, A. C. Howe (won outright); trophy, for most points in smoothcoated fox terriers, J. W. Thomson, Dunedin. Other trophies were gained as follows: Best- fox terrier dog, pup-py,.wire-haired or smooth-coated, bred by exhibitor, J. IV. Spence’s Akakara Billy ; best terrier bitch, puppy, wirehaired or smooth-coated, bred by exhibitor, J. IV. Spence’s Akakara Astonishment ; best Irish terrier, C. Ride’s Hardy Little Demon; best wire-haired fox terrier, J. Jamieson’s Cattlesmore Admiral.
WELLINGTON, August 6. The following prisoners were sentenced at the Supreme Court to-day : John Adair and Rube May, stewards on the s.s. Mararoa. for theft, receiving six months’ imprisonment; George Howe, a Chinaman, for keeping a common bawdy house, two years.
BLENHEIM, August G. A rather serious accident occurred at the railway crossing this morning. A four-year-old child of Arthur Buckman, playing on the line at the crossing. tried to run across in front of an approaching train. It got bewildered and stopped, and was caught by the cowcatcher of the engine and thrown against a post. Tho child was seriously injured, and probable concussion of the brain will result.
CHRISTCHURCH, August 6. At a meeting of the Christchurch Band Contest Committee, held yesterday evening, it was decided that entries for test Belectionsv.and marching competition should close on September 21st, and solos, trios, and quartettes oil October 19th,
DUNEDIN, August 6. A largely attended meeting of the Otagn Sawinillers Union resolved thatthe Government be requested to increase the duty on all foreign and Australian timber to 5s per hundred feet for all sizes less than 12 x 3, whether dressed or undressed, and leave the present duty on all timber imported above that size. Also that the Government be asked to impose 4s per one hundred feet 011 all kauri exported from the- Dominion.
Air. W. Scott, addressing the Arbitration Court in the coalmining dispute, on behalf of the employers, said that lignite mining in New Zealand was doomed 011 account of tho excessive cost of working this poor coal. The heavy burdens the owners had to bear in regard to increased taxation and competition were having a serious effect. 011 the industry. Electricity was being used by trades in place of engine coal, upon which lignite mines depended largely. GORE, August 6. Miss Koarno, visitor to Air. P. Ford’s, Chatton, was thrown from her horse last night on. the road to tho schoolhouse, and sustained concussion of.the brain. She is still unconscious. Further particulars are not available.
