CORRESPONDENCE.

[Correspondence on public matters is welcomed at all times, but it must be distinctly understood that this journal is in no way associated with the opinions of its correspondents.] THE HOCKEY REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. [To THE EDITOII.] Sir, —I have read the letter appearing in. your paper signed “Cleft Ash,” ami as one of the selectors cannot but congratulate .the selection committee on the weak attack he makes on the team as a whole. Your correspondent objects to the way the men are placed. Let me tell “Cleft Ash” that the selection committee reserve to themselves the right of changing tile position of the men, if, after to-day’s game it is thought advisable. 1 will treat the men as criticised by “Cleft Ash.” Pine: “deft Ash” asks why play him centre forward? My answer to this is that the selection committee are not yet decided whether he or Roderick 'would he the better man, , and hope to have seen on yesterday’s play if fine adopted himself to the position or not. In my opinion, Pine will make a first-class centre, us he is a hard worker, does not. know what it is to be beaten, and is a certain scorer if he gels the hall in the circle. Grant: Let mo tell "C. A.” that this man has not been a success as centre-forward during the season, and it is not putting him out of his place playing him half as lie has played in this position for the district and acquitted himself well. McLean: I contend that this man justified his selection to the position of full-hack on his exhibition, in the trial game last week. “C. A.” says, that in his opinion J. Doyle would make a better full-back than McLean. I, as one of the selection committee think otherwise. I now come to tho part of “C. A’s” letter to which I must take exception, and which, 1 think, every true sport must deplore.- He asks why there are so many Kai Kali as’ in tho team. I may say at once, in my opinion, they justify their inclusion, if not, why does "0. A.” not criticise tlieir selection on their play. I maintain that the team picked is representative of our best players. Certainly, there may he one or two that are near ly up to the standard of those picked, hut I think “Cleft Ash,” or as lie might have signed it “Disappointed,” will he greatly surprised on the play of the team on Wednesday next, if the match takes place against tho Kelson team.—l am etc. “ONE OF THE SELECTORS.”
