THE TREASURER’S CHARGES. THE AGENT-GENERAL’S REPLY. United Press Association, Copyright ' (Received August 5, 9.20 p.m;) LONDON, August 5. Referring to a telegram from Adelaide, Mr. Jenkins replies as follows to the Treasurer’s statement“ That I disobeyed specific orders in connection with the loan is not in accordance with fact. If the •correspondence is fully published it will show that tho Treasurer’s premature an- . ' nouncement, which appeared in the “Times” of the 28th ult., prevented the completion of the bargain. He entered into the negotiations which I started at the Government’s request on tho 27th. They were practically , ; completed before my resignation, and ’ 5 ! tliey would have saved the Government between £IO,OOO and £15,000. That is sufficient comment on my financial wisdom and the Treasurers outside negotiations.”
