The Union Steam Ship Company (says a Press Association wire) has in hand a scheme for the general improvement of the conditions of deck and engineroom hands. Tile scheme, amongst other concessions, provides for a bill of fare of much higher grade and greater variety. than at present obtains among ship hands all. over tho sea. The system, which so far is in probation only, was inaugurated on the Moeraki and later on tho Maheno. . The crew of the Waikare are the latest to undergo the experiment, and it is understood the Maitai is to be brought into line with the new idea. If the management obtains full co-operation and appreciation of those who are to benefit a greater extension of the system is certain, and its adoption: in the intercolonial service would bo, it ds believed, only a matter of time. So far flic men who have been initiated into the now order of things certainly have expressed tbe-r satisfaction at the company’s efforts to improve their state of living as employees, and lately the New Zealand branch of the Federated Seamen’s Union carried a- resolution of thanks for the improvement in the fare and quarters obtained.
