The Captain Cook Memorial Committee, interested‘in the erection of a monument at Ship Cove, Queen Charlotte Sound, met at Blenheim last week. It was reported that the funds, including the Government subsidy of £IOQ, had reached about £270. It is estimated that the cost of a monument will-'be about £6OO. It is proposed that the design shall heboid in outline, and the height not less than 26ft, measured from the surface. The memorial may be surmounted by a figure of Captain CoMi, or be a pl'iin obelisk, or other form. The pedestal or lower portion will have at the base literal or symbolic illustration, or both, of the life of the great navigator, with especial reference to his visits to New Zealand, •liis gifts of the fruits of civilised life to the Maoris, and his peaceful and magnanimous methods in dealing with them.
