CHILDREN’S ENTERTAINMENT.

IN AID OF THE MATERNITY HOME.

The Cook County Women’s Guild have every reason to be satisfied with the public response to their efforts to found a Maternity Homo in Gisborne, for His Majesty’s Theatre wias crowded to excess last evening, when a most enjoyable entertainment was staged to provide funds for that purpose. Tlie whole programme was provided by children trailed by Mrs. F. Hayes and Miss V. Pearce, and both ladies received the warmest congratulation on the result of tlieir patient work. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the concert, and entered into the spirit of the children; with a wholesome heartiness, and their delight was ‘expressed by frequent encores and rounds of applause. The concert opened with the nautical scene, entitled “Life On The Ocean Wave,” in which Miss E. Hayes sang “Nancy Lee,” Misses McConnell, Miller, Parker, and Church the quartette “Four Jolly Sailormen,” and Mast or Len. Skeet “Jack’s the Boy.” In the firsT part of the programme Master A. Rhinesmith played a violin solo, Master L. Skeet sang “My Inquisitive Kiddy,” Miss E. Nicolas “Dear Little Boy Next Door,” and little Vera Wootton “Dreamy Eyes.” Miss Edna Hayes the Misses Pearce and McConnell and Miss Elsie Nicolas also gave dances. The second part of the programme opened with a street scene, in which a number of children contributed the chorus “Dinah.” Miss Nicolas sang “Moon Dear,”, Masters Lowndes and Skeet contributed a duet, and Miss Edna Hayes sang “Please Give Ale a Penny, Sir,” during which a number of coins were thrown upon, the stager An effective tableau, “Faith, Hope, and Charity.” y. r as'Shown. Master ‘‘Doh, Ray, Me” in good style,' and the performance concluded with a coon scene, in which the children sang coon songs, and bliss Okey Kiwi danced a most graceful Cakewalk, which undoubtedly was the best item of the evening, and the performer was accorded a well-deser-ved encore. Master K. Iverekere and Mr. A. Strong acted as accompanists. Messrs Vita Bros.’ orchestra contributed selections, and the Gisborne City Band -played in front of the theatre previous to the performance.
