A CLERGYMAN’S NEW BOOK, DUNEDIN PRESBYTERY TAKES ACTION. [Press Association.] . DUNEDIN, August 4. , At a meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery to-day, leferenco was made to the Rev. J. Gibson Smith’s book, “The Christ .of the Cross,” and the Rev. R. R. AI. Sutherland gave-notice of motion as follows—“ Whereas the Rev. Gibson Smith, a minister <>f the church, has, on three separate occasions, to three different Presbyteries, declared with all solemnity of oath that he sincerely owned ail’d believed the doctrine of the church as explained in the Westminster confessionof faith, and vowed that he would constantly and firmly adhere thereto, and to the utmost of his powers as- a) serf, maintain, and defend the same, and whereas ho had published a book entitled “The Cbirst of tlie Cross,” in which lie announces, not only his disbelief in the confessional doctrine of the death of our Lord, hut his book makes it plain, also, that this attitude of disbelief and antagonism is not a tiling of recent date, and his more recent utterances from the pulpit show that it dates hack beyond the beginning of his ministry in New Zealand, il is therefore hereby humbly overturn! by the Presbytery of Dunem IU , to tlm General Assembly of the •Presbyterian Church of New Zealand to take promises iu,to consideration ami t 0 deal with the question involved in such n manner as shall to the Assembly seem best for tlie good ' of the church and for the.glory'of God. It was dcckled-that the overture be Kcr?jjtcd, but tlie opinion AVr.,V expressed that the Dunedin Pres-; bytery should not discuss the matter until the Wellington Presbytery had eonsidored it.
