THE EDUCATION ACT.
DISCUSSION ON THE AMENDAIENT BILL. [Press Association.] DUNEDIN, August 1. A special meeting of tlio Otago Educational Institute was hold today to discuss tlio provisions of the Education Act Amendment Bill,when the following resolutions wero carried:—“That this meeting of teachers heartily congratulates the Alinister of Education on the production of a Bill which provides for staffing and salaries, and that the attention of the Alinistor he called to the inadequate stalling proposed to bo allotted to schools in Grade GA. The inadequacy of the stalling was shown h,y the fact that in schools of from 81 to 120 pupils there was provision for two assistants, while in schools of from 121 to IGO pupils in Grade GA two assistants only were provided for. That the Alinistor bo asked to classify separately the positions held by males and females; that the executive of the New Zealand Educational Institute be recommended to urge the Alinistor to modify clause,7, sec. 7, so as to secure from reduction tlio salary of any teacher whose school is reduced in grade until such teacher has had ail opportunity of applying for and receiving a transfer to a higher or an equivalent position; that the Atinister be asked to make provision so that teachers with 20 years’ service, whose salaries arc less than £2OO a year, and teachers with 15 years’ service, whoso salaries are less' than £l6O, shaft receive the maximum salary of their grade from Ist January, 1909.” It was decided to set u]i a committee to consider the Bill in detail and report to the Institute. ’ ■ ■
