Co.’s Moana, which leaves for Auckland this morning is taking a very large number of .passengers for Auckland, in connection With the visit of tho American fleet. The e.s. TVimmera. which leaves on Wednesday next, also has her accommodation fully taken up, as is the case with the s.s. Waikare next Saturday. In view of the fact that a large number of intending visitors to Auckland have been unablo to secure, passages, tho question of providing an additional steamer is being considered. The 'Northern S.S. Co. have decided to add two steamers to their fleet of coastal steamers (says a Press ——-Asoci ition message from Auckland). Mr. C. Ransou. general manager of the Northern 'Company, stated that the company had iust concluded the purchase of the steamer Tasman, of the Anchor li'je. trifling across the Cook Straits. The Tasman will be delivered to' tlio Northern Company at Wanganui about the middle of next month. The Northern Company is also preparing to build another steamer, which is to be 100 ft longer th in the Ngapuhi, and will carry from 50 to 60 more .passengers than that vossel will. Her cabins will be on the same scale as the Rarawa’s. It is said that the recent bad wea- , thcr oil the West Coast - failed to 1 make any notable difference to the Taviuni’fc-positioii, but heavy rain decayed salvage operations somewhat. The cut in the Westport breakwater through which it i:- proposed to launch the Tavhmj, will be about ,50ft wide and JOft deep, and it is said that satisfactory ;nrogres3 is being made with the work. It is understood Gars the “New Zealand Times”) that record-breaking as regards .fast steaming k now discouraged by the- head official* of the Union Company. All tint, is now required of the engineers is to keep their respective steamers well up to schedule time without any frantic efforts to clip aYew hours, minutes, or seconds, off the ' previous record from one port to another.
