A TRAINING SHIP.
THE UNION COMPANY’S EXPERIMENT.

Considerable interest is being taken in the experiment which tlic Union Company have decided to make in the direction of training youths for subsequent service as officers. The Company recently purchased two sailing shins, the Hartford and Loch Lomond, and on the arrival of the latter in the Dominion it will 'he decided which of the two will bo utilised for a training ship. Applicants for appointments must bo British subjects of the European race, New Zealanders horn to hive the .preference, ago fifteen and under seventeen, passed the sixth standard, or its equivalent, term of service, indentures to be signed for four years; premium £SO, a portion of which will (bo returned as pay, first year £3 per annum, secoiul year £0 per .annum, third year £9 per annum, fourth year £32 per annum; uniform to ho supplied by parents or .guardians; holidays, ten days yearly, when practicable, free •'Siloon passage to home port; pocket money, parents or guardians providing pocket money for .apprenticed cadets to hand same to captain, to be given to apprenticed cadets at his discretion.
