ARRANGEMENTS FOR OPENING CEREMONY. A mooting of those willing to act on sub-committees in connection with the oiioning ot the new Garrison. Ilall was hold In tlio Poverty Hay Turf Club’s rooms last oyening. About 20 gentlemen, tho majority of whom represented the —.different volunteer corps in the district, with a feiv civilians, attended. Captain A. G. Beore, of the Gisborne Rifles, was voted to the chair, and apologised for the absence or Liout.-Colonel Porter, llis Worship tho Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), and Messrs F. Harris and G. A. Darton. Tho chairman explained that the object of the meeting was to. appoint sub-committees in connection ivitli tho ball with which it was intended to opon the noav Garrison Hall on Wednesday, 28th October (first Shoav night). It was intended by tlio trustccs and executive committee to make the opening function a brilliant success, and with this end in view it was desired to enlist the interest of tho general public. Tlio new hall avas more than a drillshed, for tho volunteers—it was a building which every citizen should t-a'ko a- pride and interest in. By inviting tho public to -assist the volunteers in making arrangements for the opening ball, they hoped to get tbe civilians to take an interest in the hall and in defence matters generally. Lieut. 0. Ilellier Evans, lion, secretary of tho executive committee, stated that the noav hall should not be regarded as having been ci'ected solely for -the bonefit of voluntcere. It, was something of which the public should be proud, and in which. they hoped they would take a keen interest. The trustees looked to tho public confidently to assist them in meeting the heavy liability -incurred in purchasing tho site and erecting such a fine structure, which, when completed, would bo a credit to the town and district. , It was intended to make the opening ball a phenomenal success, and tho meeting that evening had been called to take preliminary steps towards that end. Tho following sub-committees woro then appointed:— Slipper Committee Messrs J. Toaniloy and H. White, Surgeon-Captain Scott, and Captain Beere. Refreshment Committee: Messrs F. Harris and G. Btiscke. Captain D. Coavan (Defence Cadets), Sergt. C. R-. Spragg (E.C.M.R.)
Decorations: His Worship the Mayor, Messrs G. A. Darton and D. Trent, Quartermaster-Sergeant A. Zachariah (E.C.M.R.), Sergeant. L. Oates and Trs. W. Gibson and H. Cave (E.C.M.R.) Floor Committee: Messrs C. Adair and T. G. Lawless, Surgeon-Captain Schumacher (Gisborne Rifles), Lieut. E. Somervell and Corp. A. Pritchard (Gisborne Rifles). Music, Programme, and Advertising : Messrs A. F. Kennedy and G. Buscke, Lieuts. Evans and C. J. Hamilton (E.C.M.R.), and Bandmaster Lawrence (Gisborne City Band). Dressing Rooms: Mr. L" Redavnrd and Lieut. Mitchell (Gisborne Rifles). Doorkeepers: Lieut. A. T. Coleman, Col.-Sergt. J. Scott and Lanee-Cor-noral A. Parks (all of tlio Gisborne Rifles). On tlio motion of Lieut. Evans, it was decided to adjourn the meeting until Wednesday. August 19th, at- 8 o’clock, at the Farmers’ Union Club rooms, Masonic Buildings.
