GROSS MISREPRESENTATION
INVERCARGILL'S REPLY TO'MR. HARNETT. [Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, July 28. The assertions of Air. G. Harnett, manager of the British football team, were considered at a meeting of the Invercargill Ministers’ Association, and the following resolution was carried: — “Tins'* Association of Invercargill ministers places on record its protest against the gross misrepresentations and wild statements 'alleged to have been made by a Mr. Harnett in an interview at Auckland on Saturday last, in which lie deprecates inferior accommodation of the hotels, extensive drinking in private houses, appalling drunkenness in the streets, fraud and deceit of the inhabitants and the complete failure of dio-license reform. These charges are completely answered ill a manifesto published over 1 lie signature of the Mayor and 100 leading citizens of Invercargill, many of whom aro -not indentified with tho 'lio-licenso movement, but who have given emphatic testimony to the splendid results accruing from the introduction of the reform. This Association expresses regret that Mr. Harnett should have adopted tho courageous (?) method of besmircli.njg tho name of our town and attacking private habits and characters of our citizens on the eve of his departure from the Dominion, thereby precluding the outraged community from asking that he substantia to his charges, and, failing to prove them, demanding in the interests of justice, truth, and honor their withdrawal.”
