GISBORNE DRAINAGE.
[To the Editor.] Sir.—Kindly allow mo, as a ratepayer of Palmerston North, to ■ express surprise at your Borough Council seeking a report on tho above from our responsible officer, seeing the disadvantage we-aro placed in by the mismanagement in the execution of our public works carried out within the past five yoars, as follows: Drainage—ln Ferguson Street many chains of sower collapsed within two months lof laying through faulty pipes being used, and, from report, other portions are liable to til© same trouble at any timo. Again, iti is necessary to flush tho sewer from tho high-pressure water supply, which,Lof course, is a great disadvantage in dry seasons. Tho septic tank is a sourco of continual expense, as it is necessary to 'keep an attendant to daily clean the metal trays fixed abovo tho filter beds and channels lending to the outfall. I should say this item runs into £l5O per year as follows: Salary £l2O, interest-, etc., on attendant’s new cottage built on tho site, £2O, bass brooms £lO. Our water supply is anything but satisfactory, although an additional £26,000 has been lately spent. At times of heavy rain it is too muddy for domestic use for several hours together. I Trusting tho foregoing information may induce your Council to adopt the precaution to only recommend to the ratepayers a thoroughly effective scheme, —I am, etc., EDWIN TOMS. Gisborne, July 26th.
