United Press Association. Copyright LONON, July 24. On the report stage of tho Irish Universities Bill, the Ulster members vainly tried to introduce amend-, ments. Many bitter speeches were made. .... V ; Sir William Anson expressed profound dissatisfaction at tho Government’s scheme. The now university, he said, would, I e under the thumb of a priestly hierarchy. It would bo a theological seminary. Mr. Birred would carry the Bill by such means as he used before the Act' of Union. He had bought everybody worth buving. Mr. J. Retime d argued that the 'university would bo ircely, not clerically, governed. BILL PASSES REPORT STAGE. United Press Association. The' Nonconformists vainly endeavored to compel students in an affiliated institution to complete two ■academical years in a constituent college of the University of Dublin or Belfast before obtaining a degree, but Mr. Birrell agreed to omit the conces, sion which allowed for the erection from private funds of chapels within the precincts of constituent colleges; Mr. Redmond deeply regretted Mr. Birrell’s withdrawal of the concession.
