A PROMISING SCHEME,

A mooting of tho Fanners’ Union was hold on Saturday afternoon to further consider tho question of ongaging tho sendees of a qualified votorinary surgeon. Mr. W. 1). Lysnar occupied the chair, and tlioro was a lair attendance of mombors . Tho chairman, reported that, fortyfive subscriptions had boon received and fivo names had been handed in. Tlireo eub-committocs had not yet reported, but it was thought tho scliomo would bo a success. Mr. W. H. Patterson applied lor tho position, and stated ho was willing to accept an engagement under tho terms of £1 Is for each subscriber. Mr. F. Glover, M.R.0.Y.5., Ashburton, also asked to bo infonnod of tho conditions of tho appointment. Mr. Lysnar said ho thought it would bo a good step to appoint a veterinary temporarily, and call for applications when tho full number of subscribers had been obtained. Ho would liko an expression of opinion on what was best to do. Mr. Cameron said ho was confident that many fanners in his district would subscribe.

Mr. Alloy said it was better to pay a good man a fair salary, than an unqualified man a low salary. Mr. Cameron said tho subscription was small. Ho had already paid four or fivo guinoas for advice during the year.

The chairman said the veterinary would also give advice to farmers on how to keep their herds. Mr. Cameron said it would bo as well to make it clear that all subscribers must either join or be members of the Farmers’ Union. Tlio Chairman said tho subscription had already boon the canso of twenr ty-throo members being added to tho Union.

On the motion of Mr. Camoron, the meeting was adjourned until Saturday, August 9th, to allow the secretary to canvass for subscribers.
