GISBORNE LADIES AGAIN DEFEATED. [SrEciAn to “Times.”] FARNDON, July 21. The Gisborne ladies’ team to-day met the champion Hawke’s Bay team, Clive, and after a hard-fouglit gamp were vanquished by three goals to nil. The weather conditions were most unfavorable, and rain fell during the second spell. The ground was in a very greasy state, and consequently militated against first-class play. The visitors all played an excellent, game, but tired somewhat towards tho finish. They came close to scoring on several occasions, but each time just failed. [Press Association.] NAPIER, July 24. The Clive Club defeated the Gisborne Ladies Hockey Club team today by 3 goals to nil. Tlio visitors are being hospitably entertained by the local players. (Notes by “Sticks.”) As a spectator to last] Thursday’s hot'key matches, I should like to make a few remarks. lij the first place the ground, which should be as level as possible, is not fit to ask any visiting tcapi to play on, as the part that

has been, put down by tho Cricket Association, is a sea ol mud, and of course, most of the gamo must centre there. I think that tho Rugby Union should try and gob tho Council’s roller again run over the ground. With' respect to tho matches, tho first to bo played was To ltau v. West End. Tho loaders in the competition (AVost End) easily hold their own although tlio To Ilaus strovo hard to effect a defeat. S. Roderick stood out alone in this match, and Alalloy and Hooper worked hard. The match City v. Kai lCnlm was about tlio best that has been played in tho competition, and the score, ono goal each fairly represents the play, although tho Kai Kafaas played tho best hockey. As a spectator, I caiinot help remarking that in. both tho übovo matches there was too much appealing, “more especially in the City-Kai Jvnha match; I would not have boon surprised to have soon tho referee order more than ono player off' the field. There appeared to bo some doubt about the goal scored by tlie City in the second spoil, and so far'as I could judge, tho referoo was in error in allowing tho goal after having blown tho whistle for “sticks”, but as I hear this will come before the Association, I refrain from saying more.

For the Kin Kallas Grant, Tabernacle and Pollock for tho forwards, played a good game and, amongst tlio backs Pettio (goal) played a safe game, also Garrett and Coleman. A weak spot in this team is a centre half. The City played their gamo of the season. Alartin, in goal, was very mire• J, Doyle (full-back) defended well; Armstrong I have seen play better; Grinlinton and Friar, among tho forwards, worked hard, but there was lack of combination in the team. I think tho captain should be able to help his team with a little timely advice, not that I moan that ho should be continually nagging at them. I have had a look at the trial toaius picked for Thursday next, and this should prove an interesting game. It is to be hoped those selected will roll up t 0 a man, and give the selectors a chance of picking the best available team. I believe it is the intention, of the selectors to give some of the emergencies a trial in the second spell. AVhcn the final selection is made I may have something to say on that head. THE OLYMPIC GAMES. United Press Association. Copyright LONDON, July 24. In the Olympic contests, Walker (South Africa) won tlio 100 metres race in 10 4-sscc. (Received July 24 , 9.55 p.m.) Taylor beat- Beaurepaire by 30 yards an tlie semi-final of the 1500 metre's in 22min. 54see.
