LAST YEAH’S OUTPUT.

WELLINGTON, July .23. The annual report, on the coal mines of the Dominion shows that the total output of coal in. the Dominion last year was 1,831,009. Compared with the previohs year this is an increase of 101,173 tons. The number of hands employed was 3,910. Of this number 1143 worked above ground and 2767 under ground. The West Coast mines employed 2158. The number of deaths from accidents was 12 and 31 persons were injured. The lives lost averaged 3.07 per 1000. The report on the working of the Stale coal mines for tho year ended March last shows that the total quantity of coal shipped including briquettes ami eggets was 237,309 tons valued at £199.259. It is stated that the Christchurch and Wellington depots did remarkably well during the year, they having increased thensales by about 8,000 tons each, while at Wanganui, where a depot had been established, for. eleven months some 4500 tons of coal have been disposed of “It is intended 1 ,” says the report, “to extend this class of business where the circumstances warrant the establishment of depots and an endeavor is being made to arrange with municipal bodies to undertake tne sale and distribution of coal in localities where state depots could 1 not be run with financial success, the accounts Of the Point Elizabeth colliery show a net profit of £10,481 tor the/year, whilst the Scddonyille colliery shows a loss (mcludmg £1!-J on the Briquette plant) of £o,oßo. the net profit on the working of the Wellington depot was £291 and on the Christchurch depot £.411 . The W angahui depot showed a loss of £lo9. The net profit for the year m the entire account is shown as £»44U.
