SHIPPING COMBINES.
THEIR EFFECT ON TRADE. A MELBOURNE REPORT. United Press Association, Copyright : SYDNEY, July 23= At the request of the Royal Commission sitting in London inquiring as to shipping rings the Alelbourne Chamber of Commerce lias prepared a statement relative to the effects of slopping combines on Australian trades. It is set out that the'London Shipping Conference, which it is understood practically controls all tlie freight despatched from tlio United Kingdom, allows shippers a rebate of 10 per cent. It is also alleged that a similar rebate agreement is enforced between Australian shippers and the steamship companies in the East, while an agreement, but Unwritten, prevails in the Australian inter-State trade In, favor of certain associated companies. It is claimed that owing to tlie system of rebates, trade is lost to the Commonwealth States. There is no rebate system in the Australian nnd New Zealand trade.
