The bursting of a steain-pipe badly injured five sailors on the battleship Kearsage at Honolulu. \ [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, July 22. A communication received by the Governor from the Admiralty states that it is impracticable for -the Australasian squadron .to be at Auckland during the visit of the American fleet, but tbe Commander-in-Chief, or in his unavoidable absence, the senior officer, will be in New Zealand waters.
NOTES FROM AUCKLAND. (Special to “Times.”) AUCKLAND, July 22. A deputation of the prohibition party on Monday waited on the Fleet Reception Coniinittee asking them to use their influence an preventing liquor being sold at the race meeting. It was explained bv the members cf the executive that details of the arrangements for the race meeting were in the hands of the committee of the Auckland Racing Club, wild had nothing to do with them. The license, to sell liquor on the racecourse has not been granted', although applied for three weeks ago. The deputation stated their intention of presenting a, memorial on the subject to Mr. Dyer, S.M., chairman of the Licensing Committee.
It has been decided that the illuminative seliem© for Quay Street will take the form of colored lights and festoons, lrage illuminated set pieces representing the may of New Zealand, a crown and l stars, and other devices. There are several thousands of Roman Catholics on hoard the American battleships, and arrangements have been .made for tlieir entertainment by the local branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society organisation, which looks after the interests of Catholic seamen. Thursday of Fleet Week will be set /apart solely for this purpose. The mission hall in connection with the Sailors’ Home has been placed at the disposal of the Society for the object named, and, besides various forms of .entertainment, the men will he, provided with luncheon. The American Consul-General states that some 30,000 tons of coal are to bo delivered in Auckland. Three colliers aro officially reported to he leaving America, and. with others whose charters were intimated through other sources, will thus prove none top giany to transport this quantity of coal to Auckland. Q|i Sunday, August 9th, it is computed there should b e some 33 ocean vessels in Auckland harbor, in addition to sixteen American battleships. There will be tw 0 provision ships, a repair ship, about seven colliers, three British cruisers, tile training ship Auiokura, the steamers Victoria and AVimmcra, and probably the ocean tramps Jean Arc and Hawke’s Bay. Besides, it is safe to allow for at least two or three intercolonial and coastal steamers.;
