WOMAN’S STARTLING EVIDENCE,-

WESTPORT, July 21. At the hearing of the charge of perjury against Win. T. Connelly, today, Ha-linen was re-cross-examined. He denied the material statements made by the chief witness for the Crown at Westport and Nelson, stating that Cockerey and others misunderstood and .misstated the fight, which he described.

H. Christensen, a lad, gave evidence mainly corroborative of Halinen’s and. Andersen’s as to the time they were at the theatre,.avitness stating tint he sat in the same seat as these two and .next to Haakonsen, avho was with them. Maria Alexander Pearce said' she 6aw Bourke and Connelly ' come out of Ayer’s hotel arm-in-arm, Connelly dragging Bourke, who avas drunk, against his will over in the direction of McLanohlan’s shed; that 'Bourke fell doivia and' Connelly struck him several bloavs avith a. bottle and afteravards dragged him into the shed, aa-here lie lit a, match and oil- the appearance of a man with a lantern and a dog, he hurried out of the back of the shed and over the fence. Crossexamined, aa'.itnessi said that she had no drink that day. She aa'as not drunk at 4 o’clock. Had; recently been dn Court applying for a separation order from her husband alleging lie was addicted to drink, her husband at tho same time making similar charges against her, and the Magistrate declining to make an order. Was accustomed to take something before going to bed at night. Had not given her version of affairs because sli 0 expected Halinen and Andersen, avho she knew to be innocent men, to get off, and did not wish to get mixed 1 up m the affair, but considered it her duty to come foraa~ard noav-and gfre evidence. The Court adjourned till to-mor-roav.
