CORRESPONDENCE.

[Correspondence on public matters is welcomed at all times, but it must be distinctly understood that this journal is in no way associated with the opinions of its correspondents.) A DESERVING CASE. [To the Editor.] Sir, —Some four weeks ago a mat who was comparatively unitnown to Gisborne was taken to his last rest-ing-placo. A few friends made up a' mournful procession. Facts have since come to light which go to show that a iirtle lieip will be greatly appreciated by tile widow and five young children, the youngest of whom! is just two veal’s, who have been deprived of their breadwinner and left: unprovided for. I refer to the late! Charles Everitt, who had the misfortune a year ago to lose all his house-, hold effects by fire at Te Aroha. In order to make a fresh start ho came; to Gisborne, but was only in employment three weeks when he took ill,; and, notwithstanding the doctor’s care and attention ho passed away’ after suffering for ten months. The late Charles Everitt was a bandsman for 30 years to my knowledge, and! for some years was bandmaster of the old Thames Naval and the Te Aroha Bands, and at all times gave his help willingly to any charitable object, both as a bandsman and a vocalist. These facts have come to the knowledge of Gisborne bandsmen, and the Gisborne Private Band (has agreed to organise an entertainment on behalf of tho widow and family. The secretary, Mr. C. Bollen, has already received offers of assistance from a number of gentlemen, and a meeting of those in sympathy with the object, will bo held in Townley’s Hall on Tuesday next at 7.30 p.m., at which I trust there will be a large attendance.—l am, etc., A. VOAVLES, July 18 th, 1908, THE AMERICAN PRESIDENCY. [To the Editor.] Sir, —I see by your leader yesterday morning that the American Federation of Labor declaring for ’Bryan will have a material effect on the forthcoming Presidential election. Other labor- organisations, 6ays the writer, outside the American Federation will more than likely cast their votes for Bryan, the AVestern Federation of Miners for . instance. Labor in America has decided to go into politics as a result of its observance of the trend of labor in the last English elections. AA’.hat is really the caso ? ' I have received news from tile United States that 600,000 men of the American Federation have declared in favor of the Socialist Party. The AA r estern Federation of Miners is part of the Industrial AA’orkers of the World, and has, adopted a Socialistic constitution, declaring that to Labor belongs iall it produces. It places that principle in big type in Its Constitution and on its membership cards. It was proposed last year that

Hoywood bo nominated as tli 0 l*rosidontiul candidate of tho Socialist Party. Moyer is a member of the Party also. Tho Industrial Workers of tho World to which they belong lias porfectod a branch of the organisation in New Zealand and is affiliated with tho Socialist Party.—l am, etc., J. F. FOSTER, Secretary of Socialist Party.
