A MARINE OCCURRENCE.
A VESSEL’S DISTRESS SIGNAL. ASSISTANCE NOT REQUIRED. [Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 19., Tho master of the Union Company’s steamer -Maori reported, on arrival at Wellington from Lyttelton, this morning, that at 4.39 a.m., when between jvaikeura and Capo Campbell, ho came abreast of the HuddaitParkor steamer Victoria displaying signals that she was out of control. The .Maori was taken to within a quarter of a mile of tho Victoria, Out receiving no further signals, stood on her way north. Tho captain of the Taluno, which left Lyttelton after the Maori, reported that at 9.30 a.m. he passed the Victoria five miles south of Kaikoura. The Victoria, was then under weigh steering south. It is presumed that some temporary breakdown had occurred in the en-gine-room, but had been repaired between tlio time of the vessel being seen by tho Maori and being passed by th c Ta 1-une. The Victoria left Wellington at 4 o’clock on Saturday afternoon for Dunedin. It was then blowing a gale from the south, and a high sea was running in Cook’s Strait, but the weather conditions had improved by tho morning.
