THE PAST YEAR’S RETURN. (Special to "Times.”) WELLINGTON, July 9. The annual report of tho Department of Immigration presented to the House, to-day states:—Statistics do not bear out tho complaints that the Now Zealand Government are flooding the Dominion with immigrants. On tho contrary, the returns show Hint only 2651) adults equalling .3105 souls have reached our shores by way of reduced rate passages during the past year as against 3041) stitute adults equalling 3712 souls for tho provious year. There was a smaller number of artisans, chiefly from tho strict supervision exercised by tho High Commissioner over the applicants. The new settlers brought with thorn in cash, declared capital to the amount- of £70,056, and maiiy in addition possessed a small annual income amounting to £1052. The Now Zealand Government contributed passage money to the amount of £10423. The arrivals included 807 farmers, 307 artisans and 395 domestics of all classes. The number of adults brought out on the nomination of relatives was 480. “Tho Department,” says the report, “is carrying out the Government’s decision of bringing to New Zealand in the main the farming class ,supplemented by domestic workers. It is corresponding with persons in all parts of the world and affording information as to the capabilities of New Zealand, its land laws, it’s - available lauds and other subjects too numerous to mention.
