GISBORNE RACING CLUB’S STEEPLECHASE MEETING. FIRST DAY. President: Tho Hon. J. Carroll; VicePresident: Mr. D. Hepburn. Hon. Treasurer: -Mr. G. Matthowson. Hon. Surgeon: Dr. Clias. F. Scott. Stewards: Messrs J. Sistorson, O. J. Bennett. 0. J. Parker, F. J. Lysnar, J. H. Martin, ‘ T. McConnell. and D. J. Barry. ■ Judgo: Captain Tucker. Starter: Mr. O. O’Connor. Hnndicapper: Mr, J. Chadwick. Clerk of Scales; Mr. J. E. AVhitby. Clerk of Course: Mr. A.' Pritchard. Totalisntor Steward: Mr. AY. O. Sheet. Secretary: Mr. M. G. Nasmith. The Gisborno Racing Club commenced its Steeplechase Meeting on tho Park Racecourse yesterday. Though heavy rain fell on AA’eduesday, tho weather yesterday was pleasantly fine. Tho course, tliough slightly soddened, was in fair order, and the lawn was completely dry. Thoro was a largo crowd present, and tho increased grandstand and other accommodation provided by the Club was greatly appreciated. Tho special trains from town and tho early train from AA’aikolm wore crowded with passengers, while a largo number of public* anil private .conveyances carried racegoers from all parts of tlio town and district to tho course. The day was successful from every point of view. There were no protests of any kind or no serious accidents. The totalisator, under tho chargo of Mr. YY. O. Sheet, was worked most expeditiously,, and tho sum of £5204 was put through during the day. Thirteen bookmakers wero licensed,_ and all appeared to do a brisk business. Air. G. Matthowson, in tho absence of the Hon. Captain Tucker, officiated as judge, and his decisions were not, in any instance, called into question. The stewards, also kept a. sharp lookout for suspicious practices, but the races wore keenly contested, and no jockey was called upon to explain his conduct. The secrotary, Air. At. G. Nasmith, looked after the details necessary to the comfort of everybody, especially the press, whilo the catering was in the capable hands of Air. J. Ersldnc. THE RACING. The whole, of the racing was especially good, interest being lent by tho presence of a largo number of horses from, the Auckland and Hawke’s Bay districts. -The scratching pen was not frequently called into use, and trainers generally appeared satisfied with the penalties allotted to their charges. The starter. Air. C. O’Connor, got Lis fields well and punctually away, and every finish was keenly fought out. Six horses were saddled up for the Hurdle Race, which was won in nice style by Reservoir. Cinoue, who was kept at the rear of tlio field for tlio greater .part of the distance, made a good run over tlio last half-mile, and secured second place. A motley crowd of twelve faced the barrier in the Maiden Hack Race, and backers generally looked for tho horse that would step off the mark quickest to provide the winner over a short course of four furlongs. Fancy lay between Mistime, a nice-looking filly by Birkenhead, Mr C. J. Parker’s Grafton filly Lady Ainslie, and Andrew Alack. AATien tho barrier went up Andrew Mack was the out, and was never headed, tlaiiiSUi Mistime came fast in the stwilit. Lady Ainslie again disappoint?!! her admirers, and was never pre'minent. The p.en having been put through tho names of Hinetitama, AVaipuneliu, and Tlio Stripper in the Flying Handicap, a field of eleven was left. Stylish, a fleet-footed marc by San Remo. soon showed tlio field that she "Oldcl gallop, and won handily without being troubled. Arolia was the oulv withdrawal, from tho Gisborne Ihwk Steeplechase,, and the presence of Loch Fyne instilled some interest into the sraee. On the first time round tho favorite came to grief, leaving Biillworth and Kapakapa to fight out the finish, the former proving successful after running'.:a fin© race. The Hack Flat Handicap was won rather easily by Air John Clack’s ’fay mare Spate, and Aroha accounted /for both Baltic,-wdio tell, and Kuraimi ■in the. Trial Steeplechase. Mr. G. O. ■Ormond’s Hinetitama led from start To finish in the AYinter Oats Handicap, being closely followed homo by jWhite Lie and San Jose. ) The following are the results of ftiio day’s racing: .'HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, of i 70sovs., second horso lOsovs, third r horse sso vs; Ij miles. *W.
