AUCKLAND.

[Special to “Times.”] AUCKLAND, July 8. A movement by the Socialistic party in the city, re unpin ployed, resulted in a. rep reton Inti vo meeting of workers this morning. It was announced that as u result of two days advertising by them, over 360 workers wore unable to obtain employment, Mr. Way, interviewed, said that the slackness was due to depression in the flax and gum industries. The City Council disposed of 47 men’s services last week, and a mass meeting to-night resolved to approach the Mayor to-morrow morning, asking to have relief works started. The party estimate that seven or eight hundred men arc idle, and resolutions to this effect have been forwarded co the Government.

A meeting of the Opposition party last evening was unable to decide who should oppose Mr. C. IT. Poole at the general election. Arbitration Court proceedings in connection with the tramway trouble commenced to-day. It is understood the tramway'men are dissatisfied with one of the Company’s representatives, as he will be requested to stand in the witness box, otherwise every thing is satisfactory. Mr. McArthur’s appointment is popular. It. has been decided to illuminate Karangahape Hoad from the Reservoir to Symonds Street for the visit of tbo American fleet. Arrangements have been completed to have choir of 65 voices with 55 instrumental performers at the civic reception . The committee received an order from the Jlelensville Domain Board to place the thermal springs; arid hot baths at the disposal of the officers of the fleet during the visit to Auckland. This invitation will bo included by the executive with others to he conveyed to the Admiral. Business handled during the past few Jays by general distributing merchants is brisker than, for soino weeks past, and demands made on local stocks are of a satisfactory nature. A feeling of confidence is gradually being restored all round, and the general outlook, whilst not showing evidence of any abnormal activity would seem to indicate that continuous business can be expected of healthy and increasing volume. Recent unseasonable weather has had a marked effect and the business done by retail establishments, but . a continuance of the present climatic conditions will soon right matters. Various local factories all have plenty of work in sight to keep them fully occupied and a number of public works shortly to bo commenced will nrovide activity for building and allied trades for somo time to come.
