NELSON ALARMED.
REPORTED STICKING-UP CASES. NIGHT POLICE AUGMENTED. ' l [Pbess Association.] ' NELSON, July 9. Considerable uneasiness has been occasioned recently by several alleged sticking-up cases negotiated from outlying parts of the city. Yesterday a very sensational story was related to tho police by a man, who said ho had been held un in Vanguard Street late on the previous evening by three men, who relieved him of a small sum of money. As ho was going away, he said, they commenced firing upon him with a revolver, whereupon lie drew a revolver ho was carrying himself, but which for some reason ho had not used when attacked. Ho returned tho fire as he retired to a neighboring house. The shooting greatly alarmed residents in the vicinity.
After investigation the police doubt, tlio man's story, and consider that tho holding-up was a hallucination, and that all the shooting was done by himself.
Other cases which bear tlio stamp of genuineness have boon rojxirtcd, however. In one instance a man had been somewhat badly knocked about on Britannia Heights. The number of police on night duty has been augmented, and the more remote parts of the city aro being patrolled.
