The Gisborne Times. PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1908. MUSIC IN GISBORNE.

Tho efforts that are being made on behalf of tho Gisborne Orchestral Society to secure something approaching an assured finance are worthy pf general support from that luge section of the public which.is musically inclined. The Society has had a longthy ami chequered career since in 1892 at first essayed to take a. place in the musical life of tho community. It lias had its ups ami downs, but a few members hive always stuck together ami, despite many TfirisJSi tudes have succeeded in oatisriiJg for tho musical.tastes of the people. The task is by no means, a light one. If one considered only the expenditure of tho valuable time by the members in practising for concerts, their claim to support would be a very strong one; but when it is remembered that they incur considerable expense in the purchase of instruments, music and incidentals, it will be recognised that they have a still greater call upon the community. Ordinary expense of time and money might be borne cheerfully, but when through bad weather or some other cause tho receipts for a concert are reduced below, the paying point the monetary liability thus created 'is well as the unpleasant experience of entertaining in an almost empty hall becomes altogether too disheartening. It is in this respect that a determined effort is now being made to secure improvement. Annual subscriptions are beiug solicited, and for a small fee members '.ire given the. right of free admission to two concerts (luring tho year. This plan lias been successfully adopted in other towns and has resulted in making musical societies there almost independent of weather conditions, and it is eminently satisfactory to ho able to state that similar success is being achieved ■here. The claims of the Society to public support are being recognised and already sufficient- money has boon guaranteed in the way of subscription fees to ensure the success of the current year’s operations. Already the Society, has recognised the cheerful response by tho public, and special arrangements are being made whereby the concert to be held on Tuesday next is likely to touch a higher standard than has yet boon attained in Gisborne. This is as it should be, and those who have not already purchased membership tickets must remember that by joining in the present movement they will not only secure a quid pro quo but will also still further strengthen an organisation which deserves well of tho community.
