There is on view at Alessrs F. S. Alalcolin and Co.’s auction rooms a fine display of pictures of New Zealand scenery in oil and pastel from the brush of Air J. Don "las Perrett, tho well-known Auckland artist. Tho collection is a varied one, and all the beauty spots of tho Dominion liavo been reproduced upon canvas with artistic faiithfulenss. Alt - . Perrett’s work has won the highest praise from art critics all over the Australasian colonies, and tile opportunity to secure a sample of his work at auction will glqdly bo welcomed by Gisborne residents.
A largo canvas showing Alount Cook from Lake Pukaki, at sunrise, occupies pride of place in tlio collection. The rugged mountain, warmly tinted by the rays of tho rising sun, rears its snow-topped pinnacles against a well-lighted sky, tho brilliant color being harmoniously' blended with the rich tints upon the snow in shadow. Below, in tbo Jake, the whole panorama is reflected, the water having wonderful faithfulness in its reflection. “Alount Cook from Governor’s Bush” is another view of Aorangi in the softer tints of evening. The landscape is well composed, and the atmosphere most pleasing. A smaller panel shows the mountain catching the afterglow' of tho setting sun. Air. Perrett lias excelled himself in nroducing a cloud effect in depicting tlio Cathedral Peaks, Lake Manapouri. The grandeur of the snowtopped mountains stands out in bold relief against a grey sky, through which the rays of the sun aro streaking, and the contrast is very effective.
Mr, K. Alullen, whose work is new to Gisborne, displays a canvas entitled “By Stream and Forest.” The colors are handled with great boldness. and sliow ail autumn tinted woodland mirrored in a tranquil stream that flows hetiveen tho forest trees.
In pastels, Air. Perrett shows Eonie acceptable views of favorite 6cenic siKit-s, and these, include Lake Te Anaii. An evening effect in the soft tints so peculiar to pastel work, the light of the moon filtering through heavy clouds, and reflected in rolling waves is attractively shown in the picture “Shadows of the Evening Steal across, the Sky.” Air. Perrett is also showing a number,of replicas of crayon drawings by the' famous American artist. Hamilton King, and a number of unique studies entitled “Queen of Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades.” The whole of the pictures, numbering 60 in all,- which are for absolute sale, will be offered at auction at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning, and the sale will be continued on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Mr. Perrett. will probably be leaving for England -in a few months’ time, and this will ho the last opportunity, of securing oho of his pictures at auction.
