AUCKLAND V. TARANAKI. [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, July 5. Auckland met and defeated Taranaki at hockey in the first Challenge Shield-huatell of the season yesterday by three goals to one. Tho match took place at the Polo Ground, Rein ucra, and the ruins oi the past week had made the turf heavy and sticky. The weather was unfavorable, Init one thousand spectators were present. During tho first spell both teams scored a goal, and play was very oven, hut in tlie second hall Auckland hod much the better ol it, their forward's exhibiting great pace, and Mason shooting two brilliant goals. The goals in the first spell were scored by Barry (Auckland), ami Kigali (Taranaki). Mr E. E. Madden, of the local Referees Association, controlled the game in good style. THE TURF. NATIONAL HURDLES.

- ' MELBOURNE, July 5. The National Hurdles resulted: Lady Quiz 1, Mercury 2, Wollara 3. Wafa tali did not start. The rice was run in a thick misty, rain. Lady Quiz was first away, and practically maintained command, winning by four lengths, with a length between second and third horses. Time, smm Colsec. _____
